What You Will Learn
Founded by four brothers in 1809, Mount Gilead, KY grew into a thriving farming community with a church, post office, and multiple general stores by late 1800s. Today, all that remains is the church cemetery, often overgrown, and a few original farmhouses. Take a deep dive into this extinct place and learn the power of the One Place Study, the records it can help you uncover, and the sense of community that it brings to family history research, as well as pitfalls to avoid when getting started on your own research.
Speaker
James Meyers has been a family historian and genealogist ever since the high school summer when his grandfather shared the family history and took him to the local library, which happened to be the Allen County Public Library. After dabbling in it for many years, he fell in love with the hobby again after the birth of his daughter in 2019, and hasn’t looked back since then. He is currently a volunteer with the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia in their genealogy library, a Project Coordinator with WikiTree’s Indiana Project, a co-leader with the Kentucky Genealogical Society Front Porch Talks KY Pre-1850 Ancestors, and an advocate for open and collaborative genealogy research.
