How to Donate to the Kentucky Genealogical Society

KGS is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, and donations are always welcome. Donations support KGS and its mission: to foster excellence in genealogy through educational programs and projects that preserve, produce, and disseminate knowledge of genealogical or historical value. Donors may even specify that a donation be used for a specific program or service. Examples include website maintenance and expansion; scanning of Kentucky records; indexing of records and publications; program venues rental fees; and fees for presenters.

Direct Gifts
To make a direct donation, please send a check to Kentucky Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 153, Frankfort, KY 40602, or donate electronically by clicking on the PayPal button above.

KGS's 502(c)(c) status indicates that donations to the organization may be tax deductible. If in doubt about your own tax situation, consult your tax advisor.

Memorial and Estate Gifts
To leave a legacy that honors your or your loved one's commitment to genealogy and family history, a legacy that helps sustain the mission of the Kentucky Genealogical Society long after a person's death, please consider a memorial gift or estate gift to KGS.

Memorial Gifts
When a loved one dies, encourage friends, family, and others to make a memorial donation instead of sending floral arrangements. Here are two examples of phrases appropriate for use in an obituary:

1. "Memorial gifts to celebrate the life of [insert name] may be given to Kentucky Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 153, Frankfort, KY 40602, or donate electronically using the "Donate" link at https://kygs.org.

2. "Family history was important to [Insert name]. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Kentucky Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 153, Frankfort, KY 40602, or donate electronically using the "Donate" link at  https://kygs.org."

If you inform Kentucky Genealogical Society that you have included KGS in your loved one's obituary, KGS will send you an acknowledgment of each donation received in memory of your loved one.

Planned Estate Gifts
To support the mission of the Kentucky Genealogical Society long after your passing, leave KGS a gift in your last will and testament. An estate gift will not alter your current lifestyle and will not affect your current asset balance or cash flow. Here are some examples of language you can use in your last will and testament:
  • Unrestricted Gift – "I give, devise, and bequeath to the Kentucky Genealogical Society, a Kentucky non-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the sum of $_________dollars at the time of my death."
  • Specific Percentage – "I give, devise, and bequeath to the Kentucky Genealogical Society, a Kentucky nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, an amount equal to _______%  of the value of my estate at the time of my death."
  • Residual Bequest – "I give, devise, and bequeath all of the residual of my estate, both real and personal, to the Kentucky Genealogical Society, a Kentucky nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization."

Please let the Kentucky Genealogical Society know if you include KGS in your last will and testament.
